People Helping People’s (PHP) Seeking Success Program at Jonata School in Buellton, The Buellton Rotary Club & Windmill Nursery have collaborated to plant a fruit and vegetable garden at Jonata School.
Seeking Success students from grades 7 and 8 who are in PHP’s afterschool program, worked side by side with Rotarians last week to plant a variety of nine fruit trees supplied by Windmill Nursery.
A nurseryman from Windmill demonstrated proper planting techniques and the students with a little help from Rotarians took it from there. Next week students will plant fourteen oak barrels with a variety of vegetables and will grand online casino install drip irrigation. All of the fruit and vegetables were selected to be harvested in late spring and early summer prior to summer break for the students. The students will maintain the garden throughout the year and succeeding classes will replant and improve the garden space.
The Seeking Success program is partially funded with a grant from Drug Free Communities and is intended to assist students at risk of academic failure. Students receive homework assistance, adult support and mentoring, computer education, and leadership training. Mary Conway, Program Director, said that the program has been extremely successful in helping students improve grades and has achieved a 100% graduation rate.
